Rapid Palatal Expander

The use of an Rapid Palatal Expander is the most commonly used form of transverse arch development and can be fabricated by using either a 2 or 4 band design or can be bonded using acrylic or a bioformed material. The screw variations come in a variety of sizes, depending on the desired amount of expansion needed, and configurations, either 2 or 4 arms. Recent developments have even led to screws that provide an audible "click" sound or feel to let the patient know when the proper amount of activation has been made.

Hyrax Rapid Palatal Expander


Rapid Palatal Expander is an all-metal expansion appliance typically providing sutural separation of 11mm within a very short period of wear. Up to 13mm is possible. Appliance screw is activated from front to back. Each activation of the screw produces approximately .2mm of lateral expansion.When path of insertion is not a concern and a more rigid appliance is desired,this four-banded version is available


Bonded RPE is similar to the banded RPE version with the exception of the method of attachment to the teeth. This appliance is constructed with an acrylic cap over the posterior segments, which is then bonded directly to the teeth. May serve as a dual purpose appliance by holding the bite open while accomplishing expansion of the maxillary arch. Sometimes used as a removable expansion appliance when applicable. Often used on mixed dentition cases when bicuspids are not present.
